This is an edited version of the Julian Priestley Memorial Lecture delivered by the author on 7 May 2021.
When thinking about what I might about say in this lecture it occurred to me that it would be appropriate to look at parliaments and sovereignty, which are hugely important concepts when it comes to understanding Euroscepticism and Britain’s place in the European Union (EU).
"Our hefty international influence rested on our history and reputation, buttressed by our membership of the European Union and our close alliance with the United States. Suddenly, we are no longer an irreplaceable bridge between Europe and America. We are now less relevant to them both."
"To all people in the UK who are heartbroken right now: The pro-European movement you have created in the past years is absolutely beautiful. We will build on that. And trust me: One day, I will see British MEPs being elected into this chamber again."

During a Q&A session at her party conference, the Liberal Democrat leader said many of the problems the UK was facing stem from the former Tory prime minister's "shocking misjudgement", where he "put the interests of the Conservative Party ahead of the national interest".
NICOLA Sturgeon said the SNP is offering a message of “hope and optimism” as she launched the party’s European election campaign. / The First Minister also condemned the UK Government’s contempt for Scotland and urged Scots to send Theresa May a message with their vote.
They blame everyone but themselves: the very people who cooked up Brexit, sold it as all things to all people, and now cry betrayal when reality intervenes.
British MEP Richard Ashworth’s speech in the European Parliament on Wednesday claiming Brexit was a “cautionary tale” to Europe has received a significant response on social media getting shared by many across the continent.
#Brexit stands as a cautionary tale to the people of Europe. We must never take peace and prosperity for granted. Value it, fight for it and defend it every day.
