They blame everyone but themselves: the very people who cooked up Brexit, sold it as all things to all people, and now cry betrayal when reality intervenes.
When thinking about what I might about say in this lecture it occurred to me that it would be appropriate to look at parliaments and sovereignty, which are hugely important concepts when it comes to understanding Euroscepticism and Britain’s place in the European Union (EU).
"I believe the European Union is an inspiring example for a cooperative and peaceful co-existence among different nations and peoples and deeply inspiring for people like myself who strongly believe in the need for better understanding, closer cooperation, and greater respect among the various nations of the world."
Sir Martin shared his insight on what challenges the Government is facing, what the Government and business should do now and how the UK seeks to forge new trading relationships outside of the European Union.
"Our hefty international influence rested on our history and reputation, buttressed by our membership of the European Union and our close alliance with the United States. Suddenly, we are no longer an irreplaceable bridge between Europe and America. We are now less relevant to them both."
The UCL European Institute hosted a showpiece public lecture by Sir Ivan Rogers: 'Where did Brexit come from and where is it going to take the UK?'. / Sir Ivan Rogers (KCMG) is a former senior British civil servant who was the UK's Permanent Representative to the European Union from November 2013 to January 2017.
He was leading the SNP's response in the debate on the meaningful vote. Wishart described the "isolating ugliness" of Brexit, and showed how Scotland has been shamefully sidelined.
