Brexit is not inevitable. For the sake of our children, let’s stay and fight for a better EU, before we do more damage.

Axel Scheffler won the inaugural Illustrator of the Year Award, but said that it felt like a “consolation prize”, or “even a farewell gift”, as he was not yet sure if he would be able to stay in the UK following Brexit.

Axel Scheffler, the German illustrator of a popular children's book, "The Gruffalo," has lived in Britain for 36 years. Faced with a looming Brexit, he tells DW that he is both angry and disappointed.

Children's book illustrator Axel Scheffler has hit out at Brexit as he picked up the illustrator of the year prize at the British Book Awards. German-born Scheffler is best known for his work on Julia Donaldson's books, including The Gruffalo series.

The UK has been my home for 35 years. There would have been no Gruffalo without the EU facilitating my study here. And, even if I had, somehow, studied in the UK, I would have had to leave after my studies ended in 1985.
